Ignite 2020 MG ZS Review – Don’t be fooled by the name MG ZS when searching for this car on the search page. This is because the MG ZS was originally a sports sedan marketed by MG Motor in the 2001 to 2005 range. This time, the ZS turned into a family SUV that became the first MG Motor product line in Indonesia. And MG ZS Ignite 2020 is the highest variant in the country.
MG ZS is the second SUV produced by MG Motor after being acquired by SAIC Motor, the largest automotive company in China. The first is MG GS with a larger dimension. This car itself was first introduced in 2016 at the Guangzhou Auto Show, in China. A year later, the production version was released and marketed in the UK.
MG ZS brought to Indonesia is the result of Thai production. Indeed, the Thai market had already enjoyed the presence of this car in 2017 ago. Even coinciding with the first introduction of MG ZS in Indonesia, MG Motor presents a facelift version of the ZS in the White Elephant Country.
Compared to the Thai version, some features are indeed abandoned. It could be to offer competitive prices in the Indonesian automotive market. For those of you who are interested in this compact SUV by the legendary British manufacturer, see the MG ZS Ignite 2020 review below.
MG ZS 2020 exterior
MG Motor said the exterior of the MG ZS was made with a distinctive British design and was named Brit Dynamic on the MG ZS. There is an impression of Mazda on the front view. But the overall design relies on a minimalist look and is equipped with chrome accents that give a premium impression.
MG ZS Ignite 2020 Review: Front Exterior
When the car was first launched in Indonesia in March, many mentioned the similarity of its front appearance to the Mazda. The wide and large grille design at the front reminds us of the Japanese manufacturer.
The distinctive MG logo adorns the middle of the front grille. The headlights are still using halogens. But this British SUV already uses projector technology complete with Daytime Running Light. Offering a masculine impression, there is a silver skid plate as a complement to the bottom bumper.
MG ZS Ignite 2020 Review: Side Exterior
Turning to the side, MG ZS Ignite offers a handsome design with muscular shoulders. There is a little chrome accent at the bottom to present a premium impression. On the roof, there is a roof rail for adventure lovers equipped with panoramic sunroof with glass that can be opened. Ignite variant is equipped with 5-spoke dual tone alloy wheels measuring 17 inches.
MG ZS Ignite 2020 Review: Rear Exterior
The back offers a minimalist look and dynamic curves. Offering a manly and masculine impression. Not to forget there is a Brit Dynamic badge that seems to confirm that this car still has the blood of England from its legendary brand. Reverse lights and turn signal lights still use a bulb. At the bottom, there is a chrome accent that adorns the bumper,
What’s interesting about the back is the trunk door opening. All you have to do is press the MG logo on the back door, then the trunk door will open easily. In contrast to other large SUVs, the rear door openings are not so large that they save space for parking.
The interior of the MG ZS 2020
Even though MG ZS, which is marketed in Indonesia, was brought from Thailand, there is still an impression of ‘Chinese cars’ on the inside. Charming inner material with a two-tone style interior. But the quality of the interior feels lacking, lame with the impression of elegance in the car. But this is understandable with the many features used in this car.
MG ZS Ignite 2020 Review: Dashboard
In line with the interior design, the dashboard gets a two-tone model in brown and black. Not to forget there are silver and chrome accents on the dashboard. The inside appearance feels modern with an 8-inch touch screen head unit integrated with the dashboard and has already gotten Apple Car Play connection features.
There is an air conditioner that can be rotated 360 degrees using chrome accents and bezels. There are lots of storage places on the dashboard, including a card holder on the center console. Below, the AC settings use conventional buttons. Unfortunately the comfort for the rider and front row passengers is reduced without an arm rest.
MG ZS Ignite 2020 Review: Steer
Sporty impression can be found on the flat-bottom steering wheel style given by MG for ZS Ignite. Like other new models, there are several settings that can be found on the steering wheel. Unfortunately the new technology uses the tilt feature, not yet telescopic. So for those of you who want to adjust the steering wheel, you have to adjust the position of the car seats as well.
MG ZS Ignite 2020 Review: Chair
Two-tone design is still used on the seat so as to make the seat look integrated with a matching interior. The driving position is quite good with a wide choice of seating positions for the driver with 6-ways and 4-ways settings for passengers in the front row.
For passengers, the second row seats offer ample leg room. Although for cars in the compact SUV segment, headroom is not so high. But the relief of the cabin feels with the panoramic sunroof. The second row is equipped with a three-point seatbelt, even though the middle passenger seat has no headrest attached.
MG ZS Ignite 2020 Review: Baggage
There is a lot of storage space scattered, for example cup holders found on each door trim. The luggage space provided is quite good with a luggage capacity of 360 L. When carrying a lot of luggage and requires a larger space, the second row seats can be folded flat so that the floor offers more than 1,000 L in the back.
MG ZS 2020 features
With the price offered, MG ZS has presented a variety of the latest features, including a head unit with Apple Car Play compatibility. So you can easily use various systems, such as direct navigation settings on the head unit. Unfortunately for Android users, this car does not yet get the Android Auto feature.
The instrument panel is still analog. There is a large enough Multi Information Display digital screen in the center that displays various information during driving, such as average speed, fuel consumption, to tire pressure. To help you when parking your vehicle, there are three parking sensors in the back and a reverse camera.
MG ZS Ignite 2020 Review: Active safety features
Active safety features embedded in the Ignite MG ZS include ABS + EBD + BA braking system, traction control, Hill Start Assist, stability control, and 6 airbags, including side airbags. When conducting a crash test on ANCAP and Euro NCAP, this car is able to get a four-star safety system.
MG ZS 2020 operations
Because it was brought directly from Thailand, the MG ZS Ignite used the same engine that was marketed in the White Elephant Country, namely a 15S4C 4-cylinder inline DOHC engine with Vti-Tech technology capable of spraying maximum power up to 114 PS at 6,000 rpm and peak torque 150 Nm at 4,500 rpm. Power is channeled to the front wheels via a 4-speed automatic transmission with manual mode.
Using Multi-Point Injection technology, MG offers three choices of driving modes; Comfort, Normal and Sport. Despite having mediocre power, MG ZS is claimed to have a pretty good fuel efficiency in its class. MG Motor itself said that its fuel consumption is 17 km / l on the toll road.
The driving position offered by MG for this car feels pretty good. Not to mention the wide windshield that makes driving visibility wider. It’s just that the steering arrangement only has a tilt system, which is high-low, not telescopic (up and down). To get the position you want, you can adjust the height of the driver’s seat.
But what’s interesting about car technology is that there are three steering modes; Urban, Normal, and Dynamic modes. When driving on urban roads, you can choose urban mode which provides a lighter steering system. When replaced with Dynamic mode, the steering movement will feel heavier.

In terms of handling, the impression of unsteady can not be separated from SUV-style cars. But when compared to Wuling’s SUV, MG ZS has more agile handling. At lower engine speeds, the engine is not very responsive. The acceleration is also still less than other compact SUVs. It’s just paid for fuel consumption that is quite economical; on inner-city trips, consumption reaches 12.9 km / l and 16.4 km / l on out-of-town roads.
Conclusion of MG ZS 2020
The re-presence of MG Motor in Indonesia immediately lured through MG ZS Ignite 2020 as the highest variant of this British-style SUV. Offering a legendary design typical of this nearly 100-year-old manufacturer, the highest variant is equipped with the latest safety features. Although it still has shortcomings in terms of acceleration and power, this car is fun to carry on urban streets at a leisurely pace considering its economical fuel consumption.
